Art History

In art history class last week I painted my Charles Rennie Macintosh designs onto two fabric samples. Only later did I realize how much they reminded me of two paintings that came from Scotland.  Grannie had them, then my parents and now my brother.  The paintings were also flowers painted on fabric.  Lilies on velvet, I think.  The fabric has really faded.  My brother found an old photo from Scotland with a group of people showing off the paintings.  For me it was a very cool connection to make and another Scottish link along with Macintosh.  I want to have them framed.

Plinth

And, here it is!  My topiary plinth with a person to show the scale.  Thank goodness I wandered into a Dollarama yesterday.  I found wonderful green materials -- St. Patrick's Day leis (who knew?)  and Easter basket grass.  So life-like!

Travel

Apparently some people go all the way to Belize to snorkel in their long johns!  How cool is that?  I'm sure the coral is beautiful.  It's also possible to go all the way to Costa Rica to ride a bike with a bird on your head.  Or so I've heard.

Sculpture & Painting

I'm working on my next sculpture.  We're to make a plinth and think about what a plinth means.  I'm making a topiary plinth that will change with the seasons.  It is a work in progress.  In painting class we painted one feature from an Old Master painting.  I copied one eye from a painting done by Peter Paul Rubens around 1635-1640.  Compare to last term (last picture below) -- I see much improvement!

Painted Pictures

I had homework this weekend to do a slow painting.  Really slow, at least 30 minutes.  I did that and then I did two gouache paintings for Art History tomorrow.  It's our six week review.  Again with the Charles Rennie Macintosh roses.

Toby

Is it really possible that I haven't mentioned Toby yet?!  I guess so.  I'm getting a Yorkshire terrier puppy named Toby.  He's about 14 weeks old now.  I'll get him at the start of April when he'll be about 20 weeks old.  Meanwhile he's staying at the breeders, Kingcreek Kennels in Huntsville.  He's very cute.  I like the name Toby a lot.  I could have brought him home much sooner but I'm waiting until the end of the winter term at school.  I need time to be calm and learn all about Toby.

Life Drawing

This week in life drawing we went beyond simple shadows.  It seemed to throw me for a loop but I haven't been myself this week and my drawings showed that.

Art History

I don't know if there has ever been such an art history class.  This week there were technical problems so we didn't see the Dada PowerPoint and instead spent the 3 hours on multi media explorations.  I got on a roll with a few things.  Adding more paint to old ones and making new ones.  Is it a hurricane?  A meteorite?  A rose?  Unfortunately I wasn't that smart when I photographed the metallic paint so some need to be seen in person.

Painting

I finished my landscape in class yesterday.  I'm really happy with how it turned out.  I want to learn a lot more about painting.  I'm also posting a few more Charles Rennie Macintosh designs for art history.

Art History

In art history this term my project is vaguely related to Charles Rennie Macintosh.  I'm doing roses and squares in pinks and purples and greys.  Here's are two on 6 x 6 inch canvases that might be complete.

Life Drawing

Again this week we worked on simple tone -- that is one value for the shadows.  We're also adding a bit on composition and explaining the space.  Here are some from today.

Mobile Home

In sculpture class today we each presented our mobile home models.  Mine seemed to go over okay.  We also had to prepare a one page description of our idea.  I wrote about a day at the beach and then camping with the tent.  All the models are now in the sculpture vitrines in the hall by the elevators at TSA.

Cezanne (Again)

In painting class this week we again chose a landscape to copy in the Old Masters' palette.  I guess I like Cezanne since I picked one of his paintings again.  It's called Le Chateau de Medan.  I've included a copy of the original from the internet.  This copy has very different colours from those in the book at school.  So far I've done the underpainting and started with colour on one of four focal points.

Life Drawing

In life drawing we've started to do longer poses.  Also we're adding shadow and lines to show what's closer and what's further away.  And we have to "explain the space" as she terms it.  I'm learning a lot.  Here are some from yesterday.
